We can plan almost everything when it comes to weddings — but Mother Nature has her own ideas. If you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony, having a Plan B location isn’t just smart; it’s essential. Most couples think of a wet weather plan only in case of rain, but our most popular wedding months are also the warmest. High temperatures, strong winds, or sudden storms can all make outdoor ceremonies uncomfortable or even impractical. By planning from the start, you’ll avoid the pressure of trying to find an alternative location at the last minute, especially when other couples are doing the same and options are limited.
One of the simplest options is to check whether your reception venue has a space you could use as a ceremony backup. You chose your reception venue for a reason — you love the look and feel — so it makes sense to make use of the same setting if weather turns. Many venues have beautiful indoor areas, covered terraces, or even nearby rooms that can be styled just as elegantly as your outdoor setup.
If your venue can’t accommodate an undercover or indoor Plan B, there are still plenty of possibilities. Consider whether there’s a hall or community centre with character, or perhaps an art gallery or museum that could add visual interest to your ceremony backdrop. Commercial or hospitality spaces such as boutique hotels, restaurants, wineries, or breweries often provide stylish and intimate indoor alternatives. For something truly unique, a theatre or cinema can make for a dramatic and memorable setting. And if you or your family have space at home — perhaps a machinery shed, or large pergola — these can be transformed beautifully with thoughtful styling. The space you need will depend on your guest numbers and accessibility requirements, but with creativity, almost any sheltered location can be turned into a stunning ceremony site.
From a styling perspective, it’s important to consider whether you can use your existing setup, adapt what you have, or if you’ll need additional hire items. Planning for “just in case” may involve extra booking or hire fees, and many suppliers can’t hold items or venues without confirmation. It’s best to make a clear decision early on whether you’ll lock in your backup option so you’re not left scrambling later.
Once your Plan B is in place, don’t forget to chat with your photographer. The lighting and conditions of an indoor or shaded space can be quite different from an open-air ceremony, and your photographer may need to adjust their approach or equipment. Clear communication ensures they’re ready to capture your day perfectly, no matter what the forecast holds.
We’ll keep all our fingers and toes crossed that you won’t need to use your Plan B, but knowing exactly what you’ll do if Mother Nature decides otherwise will give you peace of mind. A little preparation ensures that even if the skies open up, your day will still be filled with beauty, joy, and the personal touches that make it uniquely yours. After all, love shines brightest no matter the weather.
